MV Transportation proudly celebrates a milestone in workforce development and mentorship. Joshua Fernandez, a C-Tech in the Santa Clarita Division, is the first graduate of the Penn Foster Diesel Technician Program—a one-year initiative sponsored by MV that combines online learning with hands-on experience. His journey was guided by Jose Ochoa, a respected foreman whose mentorship was key to Josh’s success.

A Shared Passion for the Craft
Josh’s love for diesel technology started early. “My father has been with MV Transportation for 26 years, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” he said. Starting as a facility technician, he quickly found inspiration in his team, especially Jose. “Working for MV has been the best thing I’ve ever done. I enjoy working with my team and learning every day.”

Jose began his career as a lube technician at Ford while studying aviation. When the market shifted in 2005, a friend referred him to MV. Joining at 19 and now at 39, he’s built a career defined by technical excellence and mentorship.

The Penn Foster Program: Building Skills and Confidence
MV’s partnership with Penn Foster helps employees advance their technical skills through structured modules and practical shop training. For Josh, it was a chance to grow and prove himself. “I learned how to read diagrams and understand the equipment before taking it apart,” he said.

Jose saw Josh’s potential early. “He was already eager to learn before the opportunity even came up,” he shared. “I told him there’s no such thing as a dumb question.” Their partnership was built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to safety. “What we do is important,” Josh added. “Families rely on us to provide safe transportation.”

Honoring Latino Heritage Month
As MV celebrates Latino Heritage Month, we recognize the cultural contributions of team members like Jose and Josh. Jose, a second-generation Mexican American, shared, “My culture is dedicated, hardworking, relentless, and I’m proud to know where I come from.” He highlighted the strong Hispanic presence in MV’s Los Angeles-area maintenance departments, adding, “I’ve never felt unwelcome at MV.” Josh, a third-generation Hispanic born and raised in California, values MV’s sense of community. “There’s a strong support system here,” he said. “We celebrate by sharing meals, stories, and encouraging each other.”

MV remains committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued and celebrated.

Looking Ahead
Josh’s goal is clear: “Getting to the top. I want to become an asset to the company.” Jose remains passionate about his craft: “I’m in love with the work. Maybe one day I’ll consider management, but for now, I want to stay hands-on.”

When asked to describe his journey, Josh chose “valuable.” Jose summed it up best: “I started as a C-Tech and worked my way up. There’s no limit to what you can do here.”

Join the Movement
MV Transportation’s Penn Foster Diesel Technician Program is more than a training initiative, it’s a launchpad for growth, mentorship, and pride. If you’re curious, driven, and ready to learn, this program could be your next step.

Congratulations to Jose Ochoa and Joshua Fernandez!
Your dedication and leadership inspire us all.
